GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. In the next few years, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) one of the world's largest research projects, will be built in international cooperation. The idea of the initiative European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) is to realise a European science cloud which enables universal access to research data via one single online platform. In this context GSI and FAIR are participating in the EU project ESCAPE (European Science Cluster of Astronomy & Particle physics ESFRI research infrastructures). At GSI the IT department takes over a leading role by being responsible for operations and further developments of the extensive IT infrastructure of GSI and FAIR.

Conceptual design, planning, development, setup and operation of a prototype of a federated data infrastructure system, a so called „Data Lake” which should serve as a basis for an „open access” data service
Optimisation of the data infrastructure system with respect to reliability, performance and scalability
Integration of the generated „Data Lake” into higher ranking infrastructures such as the „European Open Science Cloud (EOSC)” under consideration of the „FAIR“ data principles (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable)
Make sure that the built data infrastructure system supports the primary scientific requirements of the FAIR experiments
Collaboration on national, regional, and international level with scientific as well as industrial partners and participation in corresponding workshops and conferences
Development of appropriate interfaces to individual data centres, HPC centres, and to commercial and scientific Cloud resources
To ensure the existence of long time data preservation as well as Quality of Storage (QoS).
Successfully completed studies (Bachelor, Master, Diploma) of Computer Science, Physics, or comparable course of studies
First experience in setting up storage and data transfer services as well as knowledge of storage software environments used in High Energy Physics, as e.g. XRootD
Familiarity with the concepts of distributed computing and storage as well as with the concepts of HTC/Grid and HPC computing and knowledge about scientific and commercial Cloud systems
Know-How in the data processing requirements of the participating experiments, especially the FAIR and LHC experiments
Good knowledge in basic network technologies and the Linux operating
Knowledge in programming and scripting languages as C/C++, Python, Ruby is highly appreciated
The ability to do work in project-oriented context
Good knowledge and practice of the English and languages.

The position is initially limited to a duration of 3 years. Salary is equivalent to that for public employees as specified in the collective agreement for public employees (TVöD Bund).
